How to Maintain Gorgeous, Healthy Blonde Hair

The saying goes that ‘blondes have more fun’ – but in reality, caring for blonde hair can be a real hassle. Whether your locks are platinum, sandy, silver or honey, it can be a bit of a challenge to maintain that perfect shade of blonde.

As one of the most high maintenance colours out there, blondes are well aware of the frequent salon visits required in order to achieve their desired shade. It’s a given that time and money is invested in getting your locks beautifully blonde – but what about once you leave the salon?

There are a number of factors that contribute to unhealthy, dry and brassy blonde hair – overstyling, overprocessing, pollution and the sun are only some of these. That’s why it’s so important to look after your blonde hair after you’ve had it coloured, so that you can have beautiful, healthy and strong hair all year long.

As blonde hair specialists on the Sunshine Coast, we know what it takes to maintain gorgeous, healthy blonde hair – here are our top tips to get you there:

Keep your hair hydrated and moisturised

We all know the process involved with achieving that perfect shade of blonde, and needless to say we do put our hair through some tough times! Even with the most experienced blonde hair specialists, lightening the hair can be a harsh process, especially if it’s in poor condition to begin with.

Keeping your hair well hydrated and moisturised is key to protecting your locks against future styling and processing. We recommend investing in a good quality deep conditioning hair mask, and to apply it once a week for at least an hour (overnight is best!).

Heat protection is a must

Whether it be a hairdryer, curler or straightener, many of us are guilty of using heat styling tools on a regular basis. If your hair is already lightened, the hair cuticles are likely to have been stripped of nutrients and natural oils, meaning your hair is susceptible to breakage. Once you add the heat of your styling tools to this, it can really damage and dull your colour.

If you are a daily user of heat styling tools, try and give your hair a rest from them every once in a while. Experiment with days where you let your hair dry naturally, or have it styled up and out of the way.

When you do use heat styling tools, make sure to use a protectant spray or cream beforehand. Once again, investing in a quality product for the job will make a huge difference in the long run.

Invest in Olaplex

Olaplex is a bonding product that helps to repair and maintain hair that has been damaged through the use of heat styling tools and chemical processing. It has taken the world by storm over the past few years, and has been raved about by many hair salons, stylists and celebrities.

Unlike a conditioning treatment – which simply coats the hair shaft – Olaplex works to fundamentally change and improve the internal hair structure.

Here at Ms Monaco Hair Society, we have both Olaplex treatment services in the salon, as well as the shampoo, conditioner and hair perfector products available for purchase.

Toner is your friend

If you’re wanting to keep the same shade of beautiful blonde that you left the salon with, you’ll need to make friends with toner! Toner will help neutralise any brassy orange and yellow shades in your hair, giving you a more natural looking blonde shade.

The best type of toner will depend on the type of finish you’re wanting to achieve, however most blondes will get great results from a quality purple shampoo. If you’re not sure which will work best for you, ask one of our friendly stylists at your next colour appointment.

For those wanting to refresh their blonde between colour appointments, we recommend our exclusive ‘Buff & Polish’ service. This is perfect for clients 4-6 weeks after a colour, and includes a deep cleanse, retone and gorgeous blow-wave. This service is $99 and exclusively for our guests.

Get regular hair trims

While you may be ‘trying to grow out your hair’, trims are still essential for maintaining healthy blonde hair. A routine trim once every 4 to 6 weeks will prevent your hair’s ends from splitting, and help to improve the overall look and feel of your hair.

If you’re wanting further help with maintaining your blonde locks, or you’re wanting to talk to someone about achieving the perfect shade of blonde, our expert stylists can help. We’re one of the leading teams of blonde specialists on the Sunshine Coast, and are here for all of your blonde hair care enquiries.
